3D printing doesn’t just enable engineers, machine builders, and architects to have new opportunities, but also designers and private individuals to develop new unlimited creative potential. 3D printing today is used both in industrial manufacturing as well as for one-off products, prototypes, and small and large manufacture.
The FDM process works with a material that is heated via a heating nozzle and applied to the work area. The component grows layer by layer. The somewhat rough surface of FDM components can be mechanically machined and refined. Fused deposition modelling is particularly cost-efficient and therefore suitable for one-offs, proof-of-concept models, and small batches.
The SLS process involves powder layers being applied to the work area by a feed. The material is built up layer by layer by laser-focussed melting—sintering. Layered building of a component allows for manufacture of complex geometric models. As this manufacture is carried out without a supporting structure, even filigree assemblies with mechanical properties can be realised in a single step. Selective laser sintering is therefore suitable for manufacturing functional prototypes or for batch finishing of assemblies.
